How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers
By Wireframe Marketing ·

Ask ChatGPT for a good pharmacy nearby, or read the AI summary at the top of a Google search, and you'll usually get a short list of named businesses. Being on that list is quickly becoming as important as ranking on the first page. The good news is that these tools lean on many of the same signals as ordinary search.
What these tools look at
AI assistants that search the web, including ChatGPT search, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, build their answers from pages and listings they can read and trust. For a local business that generally means:
- Clear, factual information on your own website about what you do and where.
- Business listings that agree with each other on your name, address, phone and hours.
- Reviews, and what those reviews actually say.
- Mentions of your business on other sites, such as local news, directories and suppliers.
Five practical steps
Write pages that answer questions plainly
If customers often ask whether you offer same-day delivery or take a particular insurance, answer it on your site in a sentence, not buried in a brochure. Short, direct answers are easy for AI tools to quote.
Make your listings match everywhere
Check your Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and any industry directories. Small differences, like an old phone number or a missing suite number, make it harder for any system to be sure which business is which.
Keep your Google Business Profile complete
Categories, services, hours, photos and regular updates all feed into Google's local results and its AI summaries.
Add structured data to your website
Structured data is a small piece of code that tells search engines exactly what your business is, where it is and when it's open. Most modern website platforms can add it for you, and it removes a lot of guesswork.
Earn a few good mentions
A write-up in a local paper, a listing with your chamber of commerce or a feature on a supplier's site all show that other people know your business exists. A handful of genuine mentions is worth far more than dozens of low-quality directory links.
What to avoid
Don't publish pages of AI-generated text stuffed with keywords. Search engines are getting better at ignoring it, and it gives AI tools nothing useful to quote. Also check that your website isn't accidentally blocking the crawlers these tools use. It's a one-line setting that is easy to get wrong.
How to tell if it's working
Ask the tools yourself every month or so, using the kinds of questions your customers would ask. In Google Analytics, look for visits referred from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites. The numbers start small, but they're worth watching.
