How to Set Up Google Business Profile for a Restaurant
A Google Business Profile is where customers find your restaurant's hours, location, phone number, menu and reviews. Setting it up takes about 15 minutes and puts your business on Google Search and Google Maps. If you haven't done this yet, you're missing customers actively looking for where to eat.
Create your account and claim your listing
Go to google.com/business and click "Create account." Sign in with a Google account. You'll need one—if you don't have one, create it first using any email address.
Search for your restaurant by name. If Google has already created a listing for you (it often does), you'll see it appear. Click it and select "Manage this business." Google will ask you to verify you own the business. Most of the time they'll send a postcard to your address with a verification code. This takes 5 to 7 days. Enter the code when it arrives and your profile is claimed.
If Google hasn't created a listing yet, click "Create a new business" and fill in your name, category (select "restaurant"), address, phone and website. Then complete the same verification process.
Add your hours, menu and photos
After verification, you'll see your profile dashboard. Fill out every section. Add your opening and closing times for each day of the week. If you close on Mondays or have shorter hours on certain days, set those accurately—customers check this before they come in.
Upload 10 to 20 photos. Include clear shots of the front of your restaurant, your dining area, food dishes and your team. Photos get more clicks than text. Add a link to your full menu if you have one online. You can also add special attributes like "dine-in," "takeout" or "delivery" to help customers know what you offer.
Write a brief description of your restaurant in the "About" section. Keep it under 200 words and explain what makes you different. Mention cuisine type, atmosphere or anything customers should know.
Respond to reviews and stay active
Once you go live, customers can leave reviews. Respond to all of them—positive and negative. Thank people who left good reviews. For complaints, stay professional, apologize if warranted, and offer to fix the problem. Google shows that you care about feedback. This builds trust with future customers.
Post updates occasionally. Google lets you add temporary posts about specials, events or new menu items. These appear in your profile for a week and keep your listing fresh. You can do this directly from the dashboard without needing a separate social media post, though social media amplifies your reach.
Google Business Profile for retail stores
Retail shops follow the same setup process as restaurants. Claim your listing, add your hours and location. Instead of menu photos, show your storefront, product displays and checkout area. Retail customers care about whether you're open now and where to park, so make sure your address and hours are exact.
For retail, posts about sales, new arrivals or seasonal items work well. Include a direct phone number so customers can ask about specific products before they visit.
Google Business Profile for pharmacy
Pharmacies need their Google Business Profile to show hours, location and phone number clearly since customers often need to know if the pharmacy is open before they come in. Follow the same steps to claim and verify your listing.
Add photos of your storefront and pharmacy counter. Write your description to highlight services like vaccinations, prescription delivery or compounding if you offer them. Accuracy matters more in pharmacy profiles because customers rely on you for urgent needs.
Respond promptly to all reviews. Pharmacy customers often write about wait times or staff helpfulness—these reviews influence whether new customers trust you with their prescriptions.
Measure what your profile brings in
Once your profile is live, check your insights regularly. Google shows you how many people found you through Search or Maps, how many called, and how many asked for directions. This tells you whether your profile is working. If you're not getting calls or visits, your hours, photos or description may need updates.
